What is Functional Medicine?
Functional medicine is a way of taking care of your health by digging deep to uncover the root cause, rather than just treating the symptoms. We do this by focusing on you as a whole person and understanding how things like your genes, environment, and lifestyle can affect your health. Instead of following a one-size-fits-all approach, functional medicine looks at your body as a collection of different systems, like your stomach, immune system, hormones, and brain. The goal is to find out what might be going wrong in these systems and how they are connected.
Functional medicine uses different methods to figure out what's happening in your body, such as tests, changes to your diet, and lifestyle, and ways to handle stress. Sometimes, it might be recommended to use natural remedies or supplements. Functional medicine is all about helping your body heal itself by giving it what it needs. This allows you to take charge of your own health and how to make choices that support your well-being.

I’m so glad you are here!
Nikki Helbling, DNP, CRNP, FMACP
Nikki is a lifelong learner with a deep passion for helping people feel better in their bodies and confident in their health decisions.
She began her education with a Bachelor of Science from Westminster College in Pennsylvania, followed by a Master’s degree in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Early in her career, Nikki worked in a multidisciplinary practice as the Director of Rehabilitation, where she saw firsthand how movement, nutrition, and whole-person care could transform lives. That experience sparked her desire to pursue medicine and care for people on a deeper level.
Nikki went on to work across many areas of nursing, caring for patients from infancy through older adulthood. While she loved advocating for patients and their families, she wanted more autonomy to provide thoughtful, comprehensive care. She returned to school to become a board-certified Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner and earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice.
As a Nurse Practitioner, Nikki practiced in emergency medicine, critical care, endocrinology, geriatrics, palliative care, and hospice. Walking alongside individuals and families during the most vulnerable moments of life deeply shaped her approach to care—teaching her the importance of attentive listening, presence, and honoring each person’s story.
Driven to move beyond symptom management, Nikki completed extensive training in functional medicine and multiple advanced hormone health programs, embracing a holistic, whole-person approach to care. Through this work, she developed a strong focus on gut health, recognizing the gut as a central driver of hormone balance, immune function, metabolism, and overall well-being. She specializes in helping women navigate perimenopause, hormone imbalance, digestive concerns, metabolic challenges, and chronic symptoms that are often dismissed as “normal.”
Today, Nikki blends evidence-based medicine with a holistic, functional approach—addressing hormones, gut health, nutrition, lifestyle, and mindset—to uncover root causes and create personalized plans that support long-term vitality. Her care philosophy centers on partnership, education, and shared decision-making, so patients feel heard, empowered, and supported every step of the way.
